What Is Taxi?
A taxi, also known as a taxicab or simply a cab, is a type
of vehicle for hire with a driver that is typically used by a single passenger
or a small group of passengers for a non-shared ride. A taxicab transports
passengers to and from their desired location. This is in contrast to public
transportation, where the pick-up and drop-off locations are determined by the
service provider rather than the customers, though demand-responsive
transportation and shared taxis provide a hybrid bus/taxi mode.
There are four types of taxicabs, which are distinguished by
slightly different names in different countries:
Hackney carriages, also known as public hire, hailed, or
street taxis, are licensed for hailing in communities across the country.
Private hire vehicles, also known as minicabs or private
hire taxis, are authorized to transport passengers.
